How to Thrift Shop Like a Pro: Expert Tips for Finding Vintage & Secondhand Gems
Thrift shopping comes as second nature to me. I’ve been thrifting with my mom since I was a kid—so much so that family, friends, and even strangers constantly ask me: “How do you find such amazing pieces at thrift stores?”
Part of it is pure OG thrifting luck, but most of it comes from years of experience and learning how to spot hidden gems. Today, I’m sharing my best thrifting tips to help you shop secondhand like a pro.
With the growing popularity of secondhand and vintage fashion, it’s no surprise that search terms like “thrifting,” “Depop,” and “secondhand clothing” have increased by over 80% across Google, TikTok, and Pinterest. Even major retailers like Nordstrom and Saks have entered the resale market with designer buyback programs and curated vintage sections.
So how do you—whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or seasoned thrifter—navigate the world of vintage shopping successfully? Read on for expert-approved tips on how to thrift shop smarter, faster, and more creatively.
Go Down the Aisles More Than Once
You never know what you might miss the first time around. Racks get overlooked, items are hidden, and sometimes your eye just isn’t ready yet. Take your time and walk through each aisle at least twice.
Shop Outside Your Comfort Zone
Don’t limit yourself to the sections you usually shop. Some of my favorite pieces came from unexpected places:
My go-to blazer? From the men’s section
One of my favorite crop tops? From the kids’ section
A brand-new bread maker? Found in home goods, completely by accident
Venturing out also helps if you’re into thrift flips. I’ve turned a size 28 skirt suit into a stunning two-piece set and transformed little boys’ jeans into destroyed denim shorts.
Wear Comfortable Clothes and Shoes
Many thrift stores don’t have dressing rooms, so dress accordingly. I usually wear:
A strapless or fitted top
Shorts or leggings
Slides or easy slip-on shoes
This makes it easy to try items on quickly and comfortably.
Try On Clothes in the Aisle
Trying items on in the aisle saves time and keeps you moving efficiently—especially in stores without fitting rooms. Just be mindful and respectful of your surroundings.
Bring a Reusable Bag
Not all thrift stores have shopping carts or baskets. A reusable tote makes it easier to hold onto your finds while keeping your hands free to dig.
Always Check the Scarves Section
The scarf section is one of the most underrated areas in thrift stores. Satin and silk scarves can be styled as:
Headwraps
Tops
Skirts
Bras
One of my college-town thrift stores had literal suitcases full of scarves for just a few dollars each—an absolute goldmine.
Pack Snacks, Water, (and Hand Sanitizer)
Thrift shopping can easily turn into an all-day activity. Stay energized with snacks and water. I also like starting my thrift trips with a matcha or coffee to stay focused without feeling overstimulated.
Make a Detailed Shopping List
Yes, this sounds obvious—but it’s essential. A list helps prevent overwhelm in packed stores. Be specific:
Instead of “T-shirts,” write “oversized T-shirts for pajamas”
A clear list keeps you intentional and prevents impulse buys. Also, I’m a firm believer in the thrift gods. Every time I write down a thrift wish, I manifest it!
Create a Thrifting Playlist
Bad retail music can ruin the vibe. Bring headphones and create a playlist that puts you in a creative, upbeat mood—it truly makes a difference.
Research Thrift and Vintage Stores Ahead of Time
Not all thrift stores are the same. Research whether you want:
High-end curated vintage
Budget-friendly dig-through thrift stores
Y2K, 90s, or 50s-focused shops
I love using Yelp and Google Maps to check photos, rack organization, and store layouts.
Know the Difference: Curated Thrift vs. “The Dig”
A curated thrift store has a specific aesthetic and higher prices—you’re paying for curation.
A “dig” is cheaper but requires patience, hunting, and vision.
Both have their place—just know what mood you’re in.
Get Creative and Shop With a Vision
Create a vision board alongside your shopping list so you know what colors, textures, and silhouettes you’re searching for. When I thrift, I’m constantly asking: “What can this become?”
A skirt can turn into a tube top. A shawl can become a skirt. If you know how to sew, thrifting becomes even more exciting—but having a go-to tailor helps too.
Thrift Everywhere, Thrift Often
Some of the best thrifting happens outside your hometown. Whenever I travel—road trips, vacations, new cities—I search for nearby thrift stores and flea markets.
Some of my favorite finds came from thrifting abroad, especially in London and Paris, where op shops and kilo shops are packed with incredible pieces.
